Cancer is something many of us grow up believing will never directly affect us, but the reality is very different.
My first real understanding of cancer came in high school when a classmate was diagnosed as a teenager. Even then, I began to understand that cancer impacts far more than the person receiving the diagnosis. It affects families, friends, and entire support networks, creating a ripple effect that reaches far beyond the individual.
As I have moved through life, that impact has become increasingly noticeable. I have seen the effect cancer can have on those closest to me, including my ex-wife and her family. This led me to take part in my first fundraising initiative for Cancer Research UK, where my ex-mother-in-law and I completed 100 push-ups every day throughout November 2023 in memory of Martin and Ian. Together, this nationwide campaign raised £1,275,730 across the UK.
That experience showed me that while individual efforts may seem small, when people come together, they can create something truly meaningful.
This year, cancer became deeply personal when I lost my Grandma to stage 4 bone cancer. Being more than 3,000 miles away in New York made the experience even harder, but it gave me an even greater appreciation for the strength of those battling cancer and the loved ones supporting them every day.
Taking part in Haymakers for Hope is my way of turning these experiences into action. I want to challenge myself physically and mentally while helping support the research, breakthroughs, and innovations that can save lives and bring us closer to a future where fewer families have to experience the impact of cancer.
I may be the one stepping into the ring, but I cannot do this alone. Any support, no matter the size, would mean a great deal. Together, we can fight for those we love, those currently battling cancer, and those who may face it in the future.
