Eight years ago, my dad and I began taking boxing classes together while he was recovering from chemo and multiple surgeries. During a time marked by uncertainty and physical hardship, boxing became more than just a workout. It truly became our shared space for strength and connection, as it was a meaningful way for us to bond, stay active, and support each other through a difficult chapter.
After his passing three years ago, I found myself drawn back to boxing. What began as a way to reconnect with his memory became a powerful outlet for navigating grief, and reminding myself of the strength he had throughout his entire cancer journey. Every time I box, I feel closer to him and to the values he embodied.
Philanthropy was also central to who my dad was. He consistently gave his time, energy, and heart to causes bigger than himself, and never hesitated to go the extra mile for anyone, strangers included. Whether through organized efforts or small everyday gestures, he led with compassion and generosity throughout his entire life. Taking part in Haymakers for Hope feels like a natural continuation of that legacy as his daughter. It allows me to honor his memory not just in the ring, but by raising funds and awareness for those battling cancer. I witnessed firsthand what true courage looks like- my dad fought head and neck cancer, lung cancer, and eventually brain cancer over the course of six incredibly difficult years. Despite countless setbacks and daunting prognoses, he never gave up. He kept smiling, kept showing up, and kept pushing forward with unwavering positivity.
His resilience continues to inspire me every day, and it's that same grit and heart that I hope to bring to this experience. By participating in Haymakers for Hope, I want to show others and remind myself that even when the odds are stacked against you, you keep fighting. You fight for purpose, for hope, and for the people you love.
