During the coming months, we’ll be highlighting our fighters in training for the upcoming Belles of the Brawl VI in Boston on October 10th. They’ve committed to four months of fundraising and training in preparation to get in the ring and literally fight for a cure. Whether they've had first hand experience, their father has passed or their friend has put up a victory against the disease – they’ve all got a story to tell and they’ve all got a reason to fight. Below you’ll hear from Stacy MacQuairrie, fighting out of CoreBox in Randolph, MA.Where are you from? C-Town (aka: Cleveland) but I’ve lived in Boston for 15 years now!Where’d you go to college? John Carroll University and Brandeis UniversityDid you play any sports growing up? Basketball and CheerleadingWhat do you do for work? I am a Business Manager for MicrosoftWhy boxing? Did you ever picture yourself fighting? I’ve always loved boxing, ever since I was a teenager. Fighting in a real match has always been on my “bucket list”. I guess I was just waiting for the right time. Why on earth did you sign up to fight?? To show my love and support for my husband, children and everyone who is affected by this awful disease. You’re stepping in the ring to literally fight for a cure – Where are you drawing your inspiration from? How has cancer affected you? I’ve seen what cancer does to a person, a family, a life. It’s different when you are living it day in and day out. The world doesn’t stop for you; you have to call on your inner strength to get through another day. That is what my husband, children and I have had to do.What is going to be the most difficult thing to give up during your training? (beer, cheeseburgers, time spent watching TV?) Without a doubt beer and wine! When you’re not throwing punches and training -- what other hobbies/interests do you have? I love gardening and cooking.Who do you think is the most excited to watch you get punched in the face come fight night? I certainly have ideas ;)Be sure to check out her fundraising page here and wish her luck! Best of luck, Stacy!

Last night the Haymakers team braced the crowded T to North Station to check in with the team working over at Combat Sports. Being right across the street from the Garden, and the final four being in town it was quite the scene. We caught up with Max Lane, Nick Rossi, and Doug Clendenin doing some round robin sparring. Watch out when Max and Nick are going at each other, because that is two big guys going at it! Doug and one of his partners put on a show for a couple rounds, it was some very exciting intense sparring. All we know is, we cannot wait for May 17th to get here so we can see these guys, and all of the other fighters step in the ring to fight for a cure!

The Haymakers team made their weekly visit last night to Fitness Advantage in Medfield, to check in with Peter Goodall. Peter is working extremely hard, and we can definitely see him transforming into a boxer before our eyes. Every week his improvement is exponential, and we are blown away by the effort that Peter and his trainers are putting in. At 53 Peter is our oldest competitor this year, but I will tell you what, he is in such good shape that he could easily show some of our younger fighters what's up!

Last night the Haymakers team was down by North Station visiting the team at Combat Sports. We have 6 fighters training at Combat, and they are all working extremely hard. I stepped in the ring for a little round robin sparring with the fighters, and I got to say my jaw is a little sore this morning! We are very happy with all the progress the Combat team is making. May 17th at the House of Blues should bring some serious fireworks!Make sure you check out all of the fighters training albums on our Facebook page as well as all their training videos.Combat Sports TeamStephen Affatigato, Doug Clendenin, Janna Gordon, Max Lane, Jamie Martz, and Nick Rossi

Friday night the Haymakers team went to visit Brian Higgins at Punchtime Fitness. We watched Brian take on 3 different opponents over six rounds of sparring. Brian's conditioning has come a long way since January, he took on all comers and kept fighting (sorry should say boxing) until the final bell. We were extremely impressed with every aspect of Brian's game. His footwork, combinations, and head movement were all so drastically improved. It is literally like night and day when we look back at his January photos and videos and compare them to now. Please help support Brian's cause by either making a donation or purchasing a ticket to come watch him fight at Haymakers for Hope's 2nd annual Rock 'N Rumble on May 17th at the House of Blues in Boston.

The Haymakers team was a little anxious before the Bruins game so we headed over to The Ring Boxing Club to catch up with Stacey Frumm, who was getting a workout in. Stacey is a late addition to the Haymakers team, but she has been terrific! Maybe it's her ballarina background, but Stacey has excellent footwork to go with solid combinations. We think Stacey will be the first to admit that she had no idea what she signed up for, but her hard work and determination have really shown through. The improvements she is making everyday are remarkable, and we are extremely excited for May 17th to get here so we can watch Stacey show off what she has in the Ring! Please help support Stacey by either donating or purchasing a ticket to come watch Stacey's first ever fight at the House of Blues in Boston. If Stacey hits the weights the way she did on Sunday then she is going to get jacked. Take a look at all the different exercises she was doing in her training album on Facebook.

In a very intriguing article posted on abc news' website, a team of researchers have discovered that grapefruit juice can reduce the cost of cancer care. While harmful to mix with other medications such as cholesterol and antihistamines, it has been discovered that when mixed with sirolimus, a transplant drug grapefruit juice can help drastically. Sirolimus is naturally absorbed into the blood stream in small amounts, and increasing the dosage had negative affects on patients. Grapefruit juice allows Sirolimus to be absorbed into the blood stream at higher percentages, which has allowed doctors to cut the amounts they are giving their patients. This has cut the cost of paying for the medication from a third to a half. This is incredible research that is helping to lead to a cure of cancer. To read the complete article: Click Here

Later Wednesday night, we headed over to Boston Boxing in Allston to see roommates Dan Matuszewski and Dave Walsh. Haymakers friend, Rob Maloof of Gauntlet Studios was also there to meet Dan and Dave. Rob was looking to shoot a mini-documentary and thought these two would be the perfect subjects, and we couldn't have agreed more! We are so impressed with Rob's photos, we decided to show you his instead of ours! First off, we would like to congratulate Dave Walsh on running the 2012 Boston Marathon! D & D showed up for Ed's two hour team training class, and then were told to spar "three GOOD rounds." We didn't think they could pull it off, but Dan and Dave didn't go insane crazy! They both have calmed down in the ring, and throw good combinations at each other. After three rounds, Dave's nose was a little bloody, and Dan's face was a little swollen, but both were all smiles by the time they got in Dan's car to go home! With less than a month to go, be sure to get your tickets to see Dan and to see Dave fight in Haymakers for Hope's Rock 'n Rumble at House of Blues on May 17th!!

Saturday afternoon, we went to Boston Boxing to check-in with Dan Matuszewski, and new fighter Shelly Walsh! Haymakers has been hit with the injury bug this year, and thankfully Shelly was available to step in, almost at the last minute. We last saw Shelly on Thursday night, when she sparred her opponent, Nora. Luckily, both girls are the same size and skill level. The punches came fast and furious, and both showed excellent spirit! From what we see, their opposing styles could make this a candidate for Fight of the Night! Click here to help support Shelly on her goal to K.O. cancer! We also got to see Dan, who got his chance in the ring as well. Dan sparred for two very fast-paced rounds, where he had a chance to show his aggression. Dan is up to fight his roommate, Dave Walsh in what will definitely be the brawl of all brawls! Click here to help support Dan in his quest to beat-down his friend, and be sure to mark May 17th on your calendar for Haymakers for Hope Rock N' Rumble!
