In a very intriguing article posted on abc news' website, a team of researchers have discovered that grapefruit juice can reduce the cost of cancer care. While harmful to mix with other medications such as cholesterol and antihistamines, it has been discovered that when mixed with sirolimus, a transplant drug grapefruit juice can help drastically. Sirolimus is naturally absorbed into the blood stream in small amounts, and increasing the dosage had negative affects on patients. Grapefruit juice allows Sirolimus to be absorbed into the blood stream at higher percentages, which has allowed doctors to cut the amounts they are giving their patients. This has cut the cost of paying for the medication from a third to a half. This is incredible research that is helping to lead to a cure of cancer. To read the complete article: Click Here

Later Wednesday night, we headed over to Boston Boxing in Allston to see roommates Dan Matuszewski and Dave Walsh. Haymakers friend, Rob Maloof of Gauntlet Studios was also there to meet Dan and Dave. Rob was looking to shoot a mini-documentary and thought these two would be the perfect subjects, and we couldn't have agreed more! We are so impressed with Rob's photos, we decided to show you his instead of ours! First off, we would like to congratulate Dave Walsh on running the 2012 Boston Marathon! D & D showed up for Ed's two hour team training class, and then were told to spar "three GOOD rounds." We didn't think they could pull it off, but Dan and Dave didn't go insane crazy! They both have calmed down in the ring, and throw good combinations at each other. After three rounds, Dave's nose was a little bloody, and Dan's face was a little swollen, but both were all smiles by the time they got in Dan's car to go home! With less than a month to go, be sure to get your tickets to see Dan and to see Dave fight in Haymakers for Hope's Rock 'n Rumble at House of Blues on May 17th!!

Saturday afternoon, we went to Boston Boxing to check-in with Dan Matuszewski, and new fighter Shelly Walsh! Haymakers has been hit with the injury bug this year, and thankfully Shelly was available to step in, almost at the last minute. We last saw Shelly on Thursday night, when she sparred her opponent, Nora. Luckily, both girls are the same size and skill level. The punches came fast and furious, and both showed excellent spirit! From what we see, their opposing styles could make this a candidate for Fight of the Night! Click here to help support Shelly on her goal to K.O. cancer! We also got to see Dan, who got his chance in the ring as well. Dan sparred for two very fast-paced rounds, where he had a chance to show his aggression. Dan is up to fight his roommate, Dave Walsh in what will definitely be the brawl of all brawls! Click here to help support Dan in his quest to beat-down his friend, and be sure to mark May 17th on your calendar for Haymakers for Hope Rock N' Rumble!

A few years ago I noticed a high school friend posting pictures of himself boxing on Facebook. I learned that he was training to compete in an amateur boxing match through Haymakers for Hope (http://haymakersforhope.org/), an organization whose mission is "to knockout cancer the only way we know how,by literally fighting for a cure." I was intrigued. After I had my 4th child I was itching to do something interesting and Haymakers came to mind again. I noticed that they were just about to have sign-ups for their next Boston fight so I threw my name in the hat. I met with a local boxing trainer who talked me out of it because of the dangers, so I withdrew my application. It was Christmas time and I had put on a few lbs and didn't feel great so it seemed to be the right decision...plus I have 4 kids. I have too many responsibilities to fit it in the type of training necessary to compete. I trained hard, lost 11 lbs and was in the best shape of my life when fight night came. I regretted withdrawing my name. The next day I received an email from Haymakers for Hope announcing their first all women's event happening in Boston on October 17th. I knew that this was my time and I wasn't going to let anything stop me. I will turn 39 before fight night and the last year of my 30's is dedicated to giving back and living more. This event epitomizes both for me. It also gives me a powerful outlet to set an example for my children...that I am more than just their Mom. I chose to stay home and leave a career behind, so they don't often see me challenging myself, setting goals, or doing things I enjoy. I want them all, especially my girls, to know that they should be strong, brave and disciplined. They should pursue things that interest and scare them. I want them to see me doing something that I love so they remember that, and not just me as their taxi driver. I also want Dave to see me in an unusual light...doing something that makes him proud of me...something that makes me proud of myself. The day to day dishes and laundry just don't cut it. It's really funny because when people hear what I'm doing they're shocked and wonder why I would want to box. I can't explain it. To me, it sounds like a perfectly normal idea. Why wouldn't you? I love the challenge and intensity of it. I look at all you people who run marathons and think there is something really wrong with you. To each her own crazy. :) For the next 4 months I am going to soak up the pain and glory of this once in a lifetime experience. I allow myself to be selfish, to put training ahead of other commitments, to do something extraordinary, something that challenges and inspires me. Something that helps others. I have a friend who also has 4 kids who was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, who was not given much hope, who has now beat the disease. Dave lost his Grandmother to breast and other cancers. I have a friend who lost his young wife to breast cancer. He is now raising their daughter alone. My oldest and dearest friend is a cancer survivor. Some local friends have fought, and are currently fighting breast cancer. Not one of us is safe. Our lives can be changed in an instant with a cancer diagnosis. Getting punched in the face is so much easier than the fight they fight, and if our fundraising can help researchers find a cure...bring it on!

Saturday was fun a filled day for the Haymakers team. First, we were off to Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn to see Ari Untracht and to meet Dom Aragon Jr. Ari got in the ring for a nice sparring match- doing three, three minute rounds! Ari toughed it out and hit the bag afterwards, saying he couldn't wait until the next time he could spar, again. Dom, on the other side of the gym, got to work hitting the bag, moving around nicely. Back in Manhattan, we stopped into Gotham Gym to check in with Tim Kiely and meet Cydnee Murray (pictured left). They had a group training session where they worked with their trainer, Mike, hitting the mitts. Tim is a powerhouse makes it easy for us to tell he was a linebacker for Williams College. To see everyone's training photos, click here.

Yesterday afternoon, we went to Boston Boxing in Allston to see Dan Matuszewski. Dan's opponent and training partner, Dave Walsh was absent, but only because he's running the marathon tomorrow! We all wish Dave luck on his run in the heat tomorrow, but anyone who knows Dave, knows he's crazy enough to finish the race! Back to yesterdays action- Dan showed up for team training, and got a chance to spar for three rounds. Both Dan and Dave have had problems with NOT going insane in the ring, but yesterday, Dan seemed to have calmed down a bit. He was throwing some good combos, and could surely move around well! Check out a video of Dan sparring here! Be sure to check out all of Dan's training photos here, and don't forget to get your tickets for Haymakers for Hope Rock n' Rumble, May 17th at House of Blues!

Thursday afternoon we ventured to Newton to see John Sementelli at Nonantum Boxing Club. When we got there he was already in the middle of his sparring session with his trainer Nathan (who apparently is the gorilla in their logo!). John is really working on his stamina in the ring, and it showed, as he was able to go a full 5 rounds. Nathan is in freakishly good shape, and really made John work: by the end of each round John was sweating worse than Patrick Ewing! For most, 5 rounds in the ring are more than enough for a days work, but not for John! Nathan ripped his gloves off, jumped out of the ring to get the focus pads, all within the one minute that John had in between rounds. John then hit the pads for the next four rounds, and surprisingly he didn't stop talking even though he could barely lift his arms! It was then that we found out that his college nickname was "Johnny Pipes," and it was decided that if his nickname is "pipes" then his cousin Ray's nickname should be "the pipe cleaner." All in all, John was very happy with his day of training and thinks that he's getting closer to where he needs to be for his big fight on May 17th at House of Blues for Haymakers for Hope Rock N' Rumble- don't forget to buy tickets here! We saw some great progress in this visit, and are excited to see him again next week!
