Why I box

Haymakers for Hope’s mission is to knockout cancer the only way we know how, by literally fighting for a cure.

We all have role models in our lives. Whether it be because of their actions or character, there are those we want to emulate. For me, that person is Jack. I knew Jack was actively receiving treatment for osteosarcoma throughout our time rowing together in college, but you never would have known from speaking with him. He had a quick, witty sense of humor and an unmistakable presence to him in our boathouse. He led our team from the front, exemplifying unparalleled camaraderie, spirit, and drive along the way. When Jack passed away in February 2022, we didn’t lose a teammate, we lost a friend, a brother. Jack never let his diagnosis define who he was and was stoic in his battle with cancer. He never stopped fighting to be the best and to push us to be better athletes, as well as people. I strive to emulate Jack’s commitment and determination in all that I do.

I now work in the Maris lab at the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania, investigating novel therapeutic strategies for pediatric cancers, such as neuroblastoma and osteosarcoma. I've also had the amazing opportunity to be a counselor for the Ronald McDonald Camp, a camp for children with or in remission from cancer. Being a counselor has been a truly life-changing experience for me.  Hearing my campers recount how cancer has affected their family and friends and seeing their maturity and resilience at such a young age is truly humbling. It’s hard putting into words the impact this camp can have on the campers. Offering kids the chance to just be kids is priceless.

I am fighting for Jack, my campers, and all those in my life and beyond who have battled cancer. I am so excited to join Haymakers for Hope in the fight against cancer and raise money for Alex's Lemonade Stand and the Ronald McDonald Camp. These organizations are dedicated to funding cancer research, supporting families affected by childhood cancer, and creating magical experiences for kids with cancer at camp. As a camp counselor and researcher, I have seen firsthand the impact that these organizations can have on the lives of children and their families.  Every dollar counts and together, we can make a real difference in the fight against cancer. Please consider donating today and let's work together to knock out cancer once and for all!

Hope to see you all at fight night,

Nick

P.S. I hope you get the chance to read the stories of the other fighters and their motives for stepping into the ring. We’re all in this fight together!
