Why I box

"If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." - African proverb.

Hi, my name is Kevin Rosser and I have been selected to be a Haymakers for Hope fighter for their Fight Night fundraiser in Denver: Rumble in the Rockies II. On June 6th at the Fillmore Auditorium, I will be stepping into the ring to KO cancer.

Who am I? I am a husband, a father (of 2 boys), a son, a brother, a friend, a Veteran, and someone who has lost loved ones to cancer.

There are millions of people diagnosed with cancer each year — very unlucky... actually really f**king sh**ty — and they must battle the disease and the numerous hardships cancer throws their way every day until one is declared the winner. They didn’t sign up, there was no waiver, no instruction manual. Just a fight!!

I feel lucky that is not a fight I am facing. But that doesn’t mean I can’t help those in the fight. I signed up for Haymakers For Hope for exactly that reason — to show support for those battling cancer, to raise awareness about the disease, and most importantly to KO Cancer! I am learning to box so I can literally fight cancer. Luckily, Haymakers for Hope paired me with Coach Bernie "Berndog" Aragon at the House of Pain East (fittingly nicknamed HOPE) boxing gym. Coach Berndog and the HOPE family are awesome and they are getting me ready for Rumble in the Rockies II. Fight Night (June 6th) is not far away so it's time to ramp up training and fundraising!

We all know someone who has been effected by cancer; be it a family member, friend, colleague, or loved one. And I am no different. I am fighting for my uncle Steve Wiest (deceased), my grandpa Edward McKinney (deceased), my grandpa Cliff Rosser (deceased), Marty Buckley (deceased), my college classmate Carson Bird (deceased), my high school classmate JW Knapen (deceased), my aunt Jean McKinney (survivor), my family friend Beverly Bowman (survivor) and the list of friends and family members who have battled cancer goes on.

Haymakers for Hope’s mission is to knockout cancer the only way they know how, by literally fighting for a cure. They give everyday men and women the opportunity to fight back against this terrible disease by training for, and competing in charity boxing events to raise money and awareness. To prepare for each event, H4H combines the efforts of the first time amateur boxing participants, local boxing gyms and volunteers. They hope to help give life saving researchers the resources needed to fully focus their efforts on finding a cure.

Not every fight ends at the bell!! Together, we can make a difference. Please consider donating to help us KO Cancer!
