Haymakers for Hope’s mission is to knockout cancer the only way we know how, by literally fighting for a cure.
When I first started attending boxing classes, some people asked me if I would ever step into the ring. My answer would typically be along the lines of "absolutely not," sometimes literally laughing the idea off. But in the back of my mind there was always a little asterisk following that answer:
*Except maybe Haymakers.
Watching people you love fight cancer can make you feel helpless. I started boxing during a time when I was dealing with my own feelings of helplessness, just needing something. Something that made me feel good and strong, and hey, if I could make some friends that would be great too! Not only did I find a killer (cathartic) workout, but a wonderful community of funny, friendly and kind humans who enjoyed punching things just as much as I did.
So. You're telling me I get to do a sport I love, one that makes me feel powerful, spend time with and meet wonderful people, and all the while I get to raise money to kick the absolute snot out of cancer?
I'd say "sign me up," but I already did.
