CANCER is a word that we all fear. It’s a diagnosis that we never want to hear or watch someone we love go through, especially when it’s your child.
In August 2021, we were told that our 7-year-old son, Nathan, had cancer. There are no words to describe the emotions that overwhelmed me that day or to prepare me for the roads ahead.
Cancer was rubbing my son's back at midnight, because the chemo made him feel yucky, and telling him it's all for the best. It was handing him over to strangers, trusting them to keep him safe and praying they would make him better. It was holding my son down for painful tests and procedures, and watching the tears run down his face as I was fighting to hold back mine. It was blood tests, biopsies, injections, steroids, MRIs, CTs, PETs, and X-rays. Then anxiously waiting by the phone for the doctor to call. It was crying in the shower, faking a smile, telling everyone we are all ok. Because I had no other choice but to stay strong for my family. It was watching his childhood go on pause, missing family, friends, and school.
It was trying to answer the hardest question: “Mom, why do I have cancer?”
Now it's my turn to fight back against this terrible disease. Someday, that question won't ever be asked again. Raising awareness and funds are key to KO Cancer.
My son Nathan fought the fight and WON! He just turned 11 in June and is in his 3rd year of remission. To all the Doctors and Nurses at MGH Pediatric Oncology Clinic, thank you.
In loving memory of Angelique Mouzakis, A woman of warmth and grace who found joy in life’s simple pleasures. Angie fought and won her battle with Lymphoma, but her body struggled to recover from all the treatment.
