Goal
The average woman has approximately a 12% chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. Based on my own experience with family, friends and co-workers, I'd say that statistic is pretty accurate.
In April of this year, I had a lumpectomy to remove some atypical cells in my right breast. The results came back as lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), a benign condition, but one that indicates an increased risk (20-40%) of developing breast cancer. The treatment for LCIS used to be a double mastectomy but, thanks to the many brave women who have gone before me, such drastic measures are no longer the norm. Now, with medication and close monitoring, my risk of developing cancer can be even lower than average. I stand on the shoulders of many brave women (and men) and I'm fighting for those who continue to fight the biggest battle of all.
