Sometimes life gives you a second chance, or even two! Not always, but sometimes. It's what you do with those second chances that counts.
I’m all about second chances….
Last year I went to the H4H event with my lifelong friend Melissa as a last-minute decision. Right away, I knew this was different than any other boxing event that I had attended in the past. The positive energy, the touching stories of courageous people and their loved ones who had been afflicted by cancer, the fighters who were down to earth/everyday people, and the enthusiastic cheering of the crowd. Mel and I spent the ride home talking about the event and how much fun it would be train together. This experience left me so inspired that I knew this event was something I wanted and had to do.
Still inspired, Mel and I applied to fight this year. H4H made their original fighter selections choosing Mel, while leaving me off the ballot. As you can imagine, I felt deflated when the two of us were not selected. As luck would have it, I received a call a few weeks later that someone had dropped out. It was my second chance!
My “real” second chance came 15 years ago when I found out I was cancer-free after a yearlong battle with thyroid cancer. I fully recognize and appreciate the brilliant and dedicated scientists and doctors, the numerous fundraising events especially H4H, that make treatment, recovery, and hope possible.
I’m hoping the small part that I’m playing to battle this terrible disease will in some way help create second chances for others who are fighting a much tougher fight than the one Melissa and I are training for.
Please consider supporting me and hope to see you at the House of Blues in October!
