Running has always been a passion of mine. When I was in high school and college, it was the competition that appealed to me. As I have gotten older, the competition factor is still there, but the sport of running has proven to be a form of therapy - and at times a simple escape from everyday life.
I still vividly remember each cross country and track meet that I competed in and my dad always being the first one there to congratulate me afterwards.
I also vividly remember some more recent instances that all occurred while running -
• My dad called me mid-run to tell me he had been medically cleared of his cancer. We both cried.
• A few months later, my dad called me mid-run to explain why his treatment was going to resume but that everything would be OK. We both cried again.
• A few months later, I was notified mid-run that my dad wasn’t going to make it. Again, I cried… but that time alone.
For all the strength, clarity and peace that running can provide to those who are struggling, I am excited to be partnering with @haymakers4hope for the NYC Marathon as I raise money toward cancer research, care, awareness and survivorship. A day will come where time with our loved ones will not be cut short due to these illnesses, and we can all make a difference in securing that future.
I love you dad and we miss you every single day #SaylorStrong
