On June 30th, 2024, my mom, Joanne Pu, passed away from colon cancer at the age of 59. She was diagnosed with stage 4 ascending colon cancer just eight months ago. Even as it took a toll on her body, she faced it bravely and never complained. She stuck to her exercise routine and ate healthy, doing everything the doctors suggested. But in early June, the cancer spread to her brain, and there was nothing more they could do.
My mom has always been my unwavering supporter from day one. Saying goodbye to her the month I turned 28 was incredibly tough, knowing she won't physically be around for future milestones. All I have now are her photos, texts, and voice messages.
She was the strongest person I've ever known, full of wisdom and resilience. Before she passed, I shared with her that I got accepted to fight for the Haymakers for Hope boxing event. I wanted to fight alongside her, aiming to "knockout" cancer. Despite her uncertain future, she enthusiastically supported my decision.
I am deeply grateful for this opportunity not only to pursue my passion for boxing but also to honor the promise I made to her. If I can channel just a bit of her spirit during the tough four months of training, sparring, and raising funds, I'll be proud.
On fight night, November 14th, 2024, I'll step into the ring not just for my mom but for everyone battling cancer now and in the future. Let’s face this challenge together and stick the heaviest jab right at cancer’s mouth.
To my friends and family, your love and support mean the world to me. Thank you.
