My name is Auguste, and I am training and fighting to raise money for Camp Casco, an organization committed to sending childhood cancer patients and survivors to summer camp to let them forget about their illness for a while and revel in the joys of childhood. The organization was founded in 2014 by volunteers at Harvard Medical School and aims to address the often forgotten psychological impact of receiving a cancer diagnosis and the subsequent treatment. 

Some of my fondest childhood memories are from summer camp and now, with your help, I am fortunate enough to help enable a group of children who need summer camp more than anyone else, to go enjoy games, events, and the great outdoors with peers and siblings who understand their situation but refuse to stagnate on the circumstances.

“Cancer has a way of abruptly ending childhood: instead of school dances and soccer games, there are rounds of chemotherapy and surgery, often lasting years. Thanks to improvements in treatment over the past few decades, more children are now winning the grueling battle against cancer - but survivors remain plagued by a multitude of concerns: fear of recurrence, persistent mobility issues, and potential infertility, to name a few. These battle scars are often lifelong and serve as a constant reminder that these children are different from their peers, making them the frequent target of bullying upon their return to school. The physical impact of cancer is so great that the psychosocial impact of a childhood cancer diagnosis can be overlooked. Cancer is isolating and overwhelming- not just for the patient, but the entire family unit. Once the battle has been won, the family is left to pick up the pieces and strive to find normalcy once again.”
