My cousin Olivia was first diagnosed with Pilocytic Astrocytoma (Brain Tumor), at the age of 2. After chemotherapy and too many surgeries to count she developed Hydrocephalus (backed up fluid in the brain), and burned her retina… but the treatments worked and she was in remission! Now, 7 years later and at the age of 9, Olivia’s tumor has grown and she is enduring an additional year of chemotherapy (24 treatments… once every other week). Olivia is the strongest kid I know and shows up to every appointment with a huge smile on her face, always ready to fight, and do whatever it takes to get healthy. You should see her on the dance floor… this girl has some moves!

My dad also had a brain tumor and passed away WAY too soon, at the age of 31. I was 5 years old. I remember my dad playing soccer, I remember him as the lead singer in a band that sold out shows at the local Portuguese halls, I remember playing hide and seek and him jumping out and scaring the daylights out of me. But I also remember the hospital bed in our apartment where he received treatments when he was too weak to move. My mom stepped up in a big way and raised 4 kids on her own and shaped the man that I am today and I am so grateful for that! I have no idea how she pulled it off, but she did!

My girlfriend is a two-time cancer survivor and my biggest supporter. I thank her for inspiring me, supporting me, motivating me to be better every single day, and for just being the person she is. She has moved mountains, continues to get stronger, and inspires everyone around her.
