Haymakers for Hope is giving me the opportunity to help knock out cancer in a new way. Being a nurse on the pediatric oncology unit at Boston Children's Hospital and taking care of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute Jimmy Fund Clinic patients, I have witnessed incredible strength time and time again. I have learned that the little humans in our lives can be our most valuable teachers.
I am fighting for some of my best friends at the hospital, the most rough and tumble group of little old men you'll ever meet. They have Stage IV neuroblastoma and face 17 months of rigorous treatment. But instead of moping and feeling defeated, you will find these boys smiling, laughing, decorating the mail robot, riding around in the wagon, and racing up and down the halls. They have each touched my heart and showed me what true fighters are made of: courage, fearlessness, and a sheer love of life. It is my privilege and honor to witness and be a part of my patients' fight against cancer. If the money I raise can give these kids a better quality of life, better treatments with less ouchies, and more time at home with their families and friends, it will be a success.
Boxing has been exciting, humbling, and frustrating all at the same time. Boxing has taught me to find strength in myself and fight back when I'm beat down. But this is far from the first time I have seen this lesson played out in life. I think the famous philosopher Winnie the Pooh describes why I am doing H4H best when he said, "Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart."
Thank you for supporting the fight against neuroblastoma and pediatric cancer!
