"You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward." - Rocky
Family and boxing are two of the most important things in my life.
I'm a Massachusetts native from an extremely close-knit family on the Northshore and for the past 6 years, I have worked for Showtime Boxing, promoting and covering fights all over the country blow-by-blow.
At the onset, I started taking boxing classes to get up to speed on the sport's vernacular and culture for work, and by accident fell in love with the sweet science.
Haymakers is an incredible opportunity for me to fight back against a disease that has devastated my family and friends through a sport that means everything to me.
I was young when my Grandma Rachel succumbed to lung cancer, but I remember how trying it was for my family members to support her and what a solemn time it was towards the end.
That's why all the funds I raise will go directly to Mass General's Caring For A Cure fund. When one of my best friends, who is an oncology nurse at Mass General, told me about this group I knew I wanted to do everything in my power to support them.
This organization was started by oncology nurses that used to pool their own money to buy gifts for their patients: a dinner out for an exhausted young couple at the end of a long treatment or a birthday cake for a hospitalized Mom separated from her family. The nurses realized the positive impact these small gestures had on their patients, and, in 2011, established Caring For A Cure. Since then, they have raised more than $2.3 million to provide flexible funding for nurses to act on their natural reflexes to go the extra mile and do something personal and special for a patient. The program has made the expert cancer care provided in the Mass General Cancer Center all the more holistic and personal.
I wish my family had support like that during my Grandma's battle that could've provided a little extra help and some much-needed light in a dark time.
I am excited about this journey and it wouldn't be possible without support from the amazing and loving Maags, Millers & Monahans, Jordan Coffman, Sarah Noyes, my MHD gals, my PSU sisters, and of course my Showtime Boxing family.
I fight for Grandma Rach, Papa, Abby, Jerry Dailey, and the one and only Pam Chaisson.
