Goal
Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.
– Ambrose Redmoon
I'm raising funds for Haymakers for Hope through my participation in Belles of the Brawl, with funds going to Dr. Lin's EMBRACE Metastatic Breast Cancer Program at Dana-Farber here in Boston, where my friend Meg is receiving treatment. There's currently no cure for metastatic breast cancer, and only a fraction of women make it to the five-year mark after a metastatic diagnosis.
Some of the women I've known with breast cancer -- my mom and grandmother -- had early diagnoses and successful treatments, but others like Meg and my friend Cheryl haven't been so lucky. It feels so arbitrary and unfair that these friends -- moms like me -- won't get to see their kids grow up, or take up a new hobby, or make plans and set goals.
I'm fundraising for the dedicated cancer researchers who care for and educate patients and work to give them, and all of us who love them, what matters the most -- more time together. I hope you'll donate if you can.
You can find more details about where the funds are going here: https://www.dana-farber.org/metastatic-breast-cancer-program/ and below.
This program provides educational and supportive resources to women and men living with metastatic breast cancer and supports specialized testing and clinical trial matching to give patients the best possible care right now. In addition, patients can choose to participate in an optional EMBRACE research study – which is enabling dozens of research projects focused on understanding how and why breast cancer spreads and becomes resistant to existing treatments in hopes for a better future.
As of 2022, metastatic breast cancer is a mostly incurable disease – but the pace of progress is definitely picking up, and I truly believe that with enough funding, creativity, hard work, and partnerships with patients, we can find ever more effective treatments and eventually treatments that can cure metastatic breast cancer.
